Film Fashion

I have just finished filming my first fashion film. For me this was a very new experience and one I really enjoyed.

The concept for the film is the rejection of fashion. The story is based upon a single female character who, like most people, mindlessly subjects herself to the latest high end fashion and designer labels. We see her, however, eventually come to the realisation that just because something is fashionable, doesn’t mean its right for you.

The film aims to comment on how clothes and cosmetics can be used to transform a person. Fashion can be consumed on a purely performative level without being truly representative of an individual.

Working with two other students, we sourced a model, clothing, accessories, cosmetics and props for the film. We sourced high fashion pieces, from designers such as Fernando Frisoni, and focused on garments that were heavily textured – furs, feathers, leathers and sheers.

Above are images of the model we used in the film and the costume for the opening sequence.

The film takes place in three main locations within the character's house – the bedroom, the hallway and the bathroom. The set design and props are consistent throughout the film and serve not only to allude to the character's personality but also to the fashion industry. We focused on product placement and recurring motif to create an interesting backdrop for our story.

I think that one of the most interesting components of the set design is the use of the mannequin motif. Throughout the characters house we see prosthetic body parts incorporated into the décor. The mannequin becomes a symbol of the ideal body, and serves to represent the characters strive for perfection.

We are just about to begin editing and finalising our film. Below is a mock up story board that I drew to give us an idea of sequence. We have taken inspiration from fashion photographer, Helmut Newton. We plan to appropriate his style and create a black and white, heavily contrasted and stylised look for the film.
